Water calculation energy performance certificate provider in London and UK. Water flowing from tap. What Are Water Efficiency Calculations?

Water efficiency calculations predict water consumption in line with Part G of The Building Regulations. These calculations are required for all new builds and certain conversions. To comply with regulations, you must show that your properties water targets will not exceed 125 litres per person per day. Some local authorities have set even lower targets.

Failing to comply with water efficiency calculations will impact on your Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) calculation, which in turn, could lower your Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating.

Population growth and increasing water usage mean that the demand for water is set to increase. However, climate change and government policy mean that there will be even tighter controls on water consumption. So less water will need to go even further in the future.

Why Do I Need Water Calculations?

Building regulations stipulate that new builds meet the minimum 125 litre per person, per day limit. If your development is subject to the Code for Sustainable Homes, you will also need to reduce internal potable water use through the Wat 1 category.

Current limits are:

  • Level 1 & 2 – Less than or equal 120 litres per day.
  • Levels 3 & 4 – Less than or equal 105 litres per day.
  • Levels 5 & 6 – Less than or equal 80 litres per day.

There are a number of things you can do to reduce indoor water use. Most important is to calculate your water usage at the design stage, as it is a lot easier to change plans rather than make alterations to products you have already bought and installed.

You can:

  • Install flow restrictors to retrofit existing fittings.
  • Use low flow shower heads.
  • Install low flush toilets.
  • Install smaller baths.
